Fix Your Broken Tooth with a Same-Day CEREC Crown
A weak tooth can get you down in the mouth – you never know when a piece is going to break off and it can be uncomfortable, too. That’s not to mention the way a broken tooth looks.
Time for a CEREC Crown
So why haven’t you had it fixed? Maybe you think it will be painful? Perhaps you think it will sort itself out if you just leave it? Or do you worry about the time and money you’ll need to spend on dentist appointments?
These are all valid reasons, but the truth is, you could be surprised by the simplicity of the process for fixing a broken tooth. Thanks to new technology, it’s now easier – and quicker – than ever before. At Ocean Dental Marbella, we can make and fit crowns in a single appointment. Read on to learn about how it works and see if a same-day crown could be the answer to your dental woes.
What is a dental CEREC crown?
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cover that fits over your existing tooth in order to strengthen it. A crown can also restore – or improve – a tooth’s appearance. In the past, crowns were often made from metal, including gold, but these days most people prefer to opt for life-like ceramic. Same-day CEREC crowns are made from a hard-wearing ceramic material that comes in a vast range of shades to match the colour of your teeth.
Who is a good candidate for a same-day CEREC crown?
CEREC crowns can be an excellent solution for lots of people with weakened, chipped or broken teeth. Providing your tooth is not so irretrievably broken that there is very little of it left, you can usually have a crown fitted over the top to provide a protective cover and restore your smile. Here are examples of people who would make good candidates for a crown:
- You have a broken or chipped tooth
- You have a cracked tooth
- You have a tooth that has been weakened by a large filling
- You have a tooth that has been weakened by a root canal
- You have a tooth that has been weakened by decay
- You have a tooth that has been badly worn down
- You have a misshapen or discolored tooth
Isn’t having a dental crown a big job?
If you thought getting a crown required a lot of treatment, you’re not wrong, because it certainly used to. Traditional crowns can require multiple appointments and take several weeks. They also need more extensive ‘preparation’, meaning your tooth has to be filed down and made smaller in order to fit the crown over the top.
The process goes like this: your dentist prepares your tooth and takes an impression with putty to be sent off to the lab. They make a temporary cover for your tooth to protect it until the permanent crown is ready.
You’re sent away to wait for a few weeks while the lab makes your crown. At your next appointment, the crown is fitted, but if adjustments are needed, your dentist will have to send the crown back to the lab. If this is the case, you’ll have another wait before your final appointment.
Same-day CEREC crowns – made in 20 minutes!
The amazing thing about CEREC crowns is the speed in which they can be made and fitted. They’re also called ‘chairside crowns’ because they can be done while you wait. Instead of messy putty, our dentist uses a tiny camera called an intra oral camera to take 3D images of your tooth.
With the help of computer aided design (CAD), our dentist designs a crown to perfectly fit your tooth with precise measurements. She makes sure it looks hyper-realistic by adding detail like indentations and ridges.
Then, our dentist selects a block of ceramic that matches the colour of your other teeth and puts it inside a super high-tech milling machine. The design is sent to the milling machine and it gets to work carving the crown. It takes around 30 minutes.
Your tooth still has to be prepared for the crown, but thanks to the more accurate imaging and design of CEREC technology, the preparation can be as conservative as possible. As much healthy tooth tissue as possible is maintained. This means you’ll be in the dentist’s chair for less time and will experience minimal discomfort.
Once your new crown is glued in place, you’re free to go, and no further appointments are needed. Your smile is instantly restored. You can eat and drink as normal and enjoy a strong, protected tooth for many years to come.
Why faster is better
No one likes waiting, right? But there are other reasons why getting your crown fitted the very same day is beneficial. When you have a temporary crown put in place you will have to watch what you eat and drink. This is because the temporary can easily become dislodged by hard or chewy foods. And because temporaries are made of resin, they will become stained by anything strongly coloured. That’s spaghetti bolognese, curry and red wine off the menu for a few weeks, then.
The other problem with temporary crowns is that the margins where they meet the gum are never as smooth as the final crown. This means food can get stuck around and behind then, which can make gums sore (or at the very least, cause bad breath!). You are also likely to have sensitivity, which you will have to endure for a week to 10 days while waiting for the final crown to be made in the laboratory. It’s also worth thinking about the inconvenience and embarrassment if the temporary falls off. With your filed-down tooth exposed, you’ll have to go back to your dentist for a replacement (all while covering your mouth so no one sees).
It’s easy to see why having your crown made and fitted in a single appointment is a far better option. With CEREC crowns you won’t need to take lots of time off work or interrupt your busy schedule, you can simply get it fitted and start smiling straight away!
